Practitioners must be aware that although pharmacological support is important, so too is the addition of behavioural support.
Receiving a combination of both treatments and behavioural support can make a client 3X more likely to quit than if completely unaided (cold-turkey).
Practitioners must work with the client throughout their quit attempt to prepare and plan for any high-risk scenarios which may cause a lapse, and work on possible coping strategies in order to deal with these.
Behaviour Change Techniques (BCTs) can be utilised at every session to increase motivation to quit:
Setting realistic expectations of medication, proper usage and understanding of side effects
Knowledge on what is expected in terms of withdrawal, and offering ideas to change routines to help with this
Stress the importance of 'not a puff' rule
Providing positive praise and encouragement, built from a strong foundation of rapport
