Nicotine Replacement Therapy
- NRT is both safe and effective in increasing success with stopping smoking.
- Most common side effects are mild.
- Combining the nicotine patch with fast-acting NRT products (e.g. gum, lozenges, inhalator) has been shown to increase successful quitting.
- NRT products are typically used for 8-12 weeks, but is safe for use over extended periods of time.
- Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is the term used to describe the range of products that deliver therapeutic (pure) nicotine to relieve the withdrawal symptoms smokers experience when they quit
- The biggest problem with NRT is that for most smokers they do not use enough of it for long enough.

The biggest problem with NRT is that smokers do not use enough for long enough. It is important to highlight to clients that they should use as much as they need, for as long as they need, to manage cravings and withdrawal.
